BIPOC Mentor: Melinda Shankar

"Hello to all reading this!
My name is Melinda Shankar, and I am grateful to connect with you.
Congratulations on taking this step forward toward exploring art through TV/Film. I am excited to mentor those who wish to learn "Acting 101" and share my experiences as an Indo-Carribean Actress!

I began my on screen career full time at age 16. I grew up in the public eye as a teenager working on multiple series simultaneously, and as a person of colour, my path was filled with many "firsts".

I am most proud of being the first Actress in North America to star in the first-ever series with an Indian character in the leading role. I've worked hard to represent diversity on screen, and my experiences have led me back to the idea of sharing what I have learned along the way with those who are on a similar journey.

The goal is to give you a heads up on what real life is like in the wild, exciting, and unpredictable world of show business. I am here to help answer questions and concerns ranging from how to work with hair/makeup and other various departments professionally, to how to handle intimacy with scene partners, to talking with agents about cultural appropriation, and other tips and tricks I have learned along the way.

I wish there was a resource like this available when I was beginning in the industry, but I'm so excited to be part of the change today!  Looking forward to meeting you and learning more about your acting goals.
